One aspect of the story that is rarely told is that the mimosa miracle plant served as a local alarm system for escapees in the slave trade center of the former Gold Coast (modern-day Ghana). The mimosa would “signal” to the natives, who could recognize danger from afar by the condition of its leaves as the slave hunters prowled the dense forests.

The mimosa is a surprisingly sensitive plant. It has the unusual habit of reacting quickly to touch or other stimuli. Its natural response when startled by movement is to quickly close its leaves and droop, making the plant appear lifeless. This exceptional phenomenon is associated with the rapid release of water from special cells at the base of the leaves and petioles, causing the leaves to quickly close – and open again within minutes. This adaptation is thought to be a natural defense mechanism against roaming herbivores, although the closing of the leaves occurs at the expense of the resources available to the plant. Frequent folding prevents mimosa from flowering and can lead to deficiency diseases.

In addition to physical stimuli, some mimosa species are sensitive to temperature or to changes in light and darkness – the leaves fold into a “sleep mode” when it gets dark and open again in daylight.

Origin and characteristics of Mimosa

A robust, shrubby plant, mimosa produces delicate, fern-like leaves and fluffy pom-poms of yellow or purple flowers. On older plants, the erect stem becomes creeping. Mimosa is a member of the legume family (Leguminosae or Fabaceae) and is native to tropical South America. It is also found in Indonesia and Malaysia, where it is known as “putri malu” – which means shy princess. Sleepy plant, shy plant or don’t touch me – these are some other nicknames for Mimosa Pudica, its Latin name – “pudica” means shy or shrinking.

Mimosa is a favorite in the perfume industry. With its long lingering base notes – from softly sweet and floral at times to woody and musty. Its aroma is truly warming, calming and pleasing.
