Sobia, a traditional Egyptian drink, is a refreshing blend of coconut, rice and milk and is absolutely delicious – imagine melted ice cream, but not a milkshake, but much better, and you are halfway to the sensation of the icy foam of sobia.
A favourite drink during the holy festivals of Ramadan, it is one of the main dishes on the Ramadan table and is often used to break the fast. It can be found everywhere during this time – street vendors sell it in plastic bottles. An excellent thirst quencher, sobia instantly boosts energy levels, making it ideal for iftar during Ramadan, as well as for tourists after a long day of sightseeing. While sobia is most popular during Ramadan, it is also available year-round and is loved by children and adults alike.
The history of sobia is somewhat murky. Folklore has it that sobia first appeared during the Mamluk era, when money and basic necessities were scarce but rice, sugar, and margarine from India were widely available. The drink was supposedly created during that time and became popular among both the rich and poor. Another version claims that the drink was produced in the ancient El Sayeda Zeinab district of Cairo over 100 years ago. Evidence to support both claims is simply hearsay.
Despite the murky origins of this tasty treat, it is known to be 100% natural and contains vital minerals and nutrients including calcium, copper, iron, manganese, potassium, selenium, and zinc. Moreover, the main components of this drink, coconut flakes and white rice powder, provide it with great health benefits:
Boosts the immune system
High mineral content, especially zinc, helps to strengthen the body’s immune system naturally.
Promotes digestive health
Sobia contains a large amount of insoluble fiber, which increases stool bulk, preventing constipation, and ensures smooth movement of food through the intestines, thereby maintaining optimal digestive function. It also contains small amounts of soluble and fermentable fiber, which feeds the beneficial bacteria in your gut, allowing these beneficial bacteria to produce short-chain fatty acids and subsequently feed your gut cells
Strengthens the cardiovascular system and prevents anemia.
Sobia powder is rich in iron, which is needed to produce hemoglobin, which helps deliver oxygen throughout the body and regulate blood pressure levels. Low hemoglobin levels can cause anemia, so drinking the drink regularly can prevent the development of anemia. Sobia is also a rich source of potassium, which further helps regulate blood pressure. Research also shows that coconut powder can lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels, helping to strengthen arteries and cardiovascular health.
Strengthens Connective Tissues
Sobia powder contains a wide range of essential minerals, including calcium, which is needed to maintain connective tissues such as ligaments, skin, and tendons. Thus, regular consumption can help strengthen these connective tissues, maintain bone and skeletal health, and protect against mineral deficiencies and the risk of certain diseases such as osteoporosis.
Promotes Healthy Brain Function
The natural chemicals found in coconut powder, which is an important component of sobia, promote the production of neurotransmitters and myelin to improve and protect healthy brain function. Myelin is an insulating layer that covers neurons and ensures that electrical signals are transmitted quickly and efficiently across nerve cells. Damage to the protective myelin sheath can lead to serious neurological problems.
It has beneficial antibacterial properties
It has natural antibacterial properties that help fight infection and kill bacteria and yeast.
Preparation of the drink:
